The Wu is the fourth track on Sergio Pizzorno’s debut solo album, THE S.L.P., released on 30 August 2019.
The song began after Serge was sent a collection of music from 1970s Lagos. He became interested in its rhythm and sparse arrangement, particularly the combination of a half-time bass line with a persistent kick drum.
Serge initially had no lyrics for the track and developed the vocal melody while playing the groove. When he listened back, one phrase sounded to him like he had sung “Wu-Tang”, giving him the direction for the rest of the song and allowing him to acknowledge the influence of Wu-Tang Clan on his music.
The lyrics were subsequently built around late-night hotel experiences, following music through corridors and listening for the echo which reveals where the party is taking place.
